OK, here is a scenerio for you:

You live in an alternate reality, in this reality you are an excellent player capable of winning the upcoming tournament, you know you can win, it simply is that way.

On this weekend you can go to a tournament but this tournament exists in an alternate reality. It is both a money shoot and not. You however must choose which event to go to and you can only go to one.

BUT, everyone else gets to go to both and WILL be at both. So all your friends will be in both places at the same time.

In one event, that you know you can win, 1st place will award you $1000 and in the other event 1st gets a plaque that says simply "You won".

Now you can only choose one to go to.

Which do you choose and why?

    The plaque event.

The money is nice, but a plaque stays on my wall and I can show it off for years. See what I did.

    I go to money!

My trophies are packed in a box in storage, and I have even given some back to help some events cut costs in getting trophies, I have donated mine back to the event organizers. (I do however have a few that I would never give up... beutiful pewter plates and such!)

But 1st is $1000... you will see me there everytime!
Money talks. Thats enough money to pay for the trip, get the wife something nice and add to the Disneyland fund!

Hehe... I go win the $1,000 then, since I'm always generous with my booze and food, I go back to my house and all of my friends end up there anyway helping me spend the money!

My thoughts exactly, my throphies, medals and plaques just collect dust. If I were to recieve something, I would rather a beer mug or something along those lines.

Go for the money, and like someone said, buy yourself a plaque.

Now let's be fair, Erik. I said in my post that people will compete for anything, but given a choice of a plaque or $1000 the majority's choice will be obvious.

Nowthen... Would you rather have $1000 as the prize or your face on Mt. Rushmore or a 500 foot tall bronze statue of yourself next to the Statue of Liberty or be known across the world as the darts champion without any money at all? I would argue that an intelligent person could exploit the fame that comes from the statue or Mt. Rushmore bust for MUCH more than $1000 through the same shameless self-promotion that most other famous people use to keep their careers going, land book/movie deals, etc. etc.

It's all about the perception of what is more valuable...it's unique to every person.

Hehehe...but in your example...lay out the cash!!

    Hunter

Now if the plaque was made of solid 14Kt Gold, and jewel encrusted (diamonds, rubies, and emeralds of course)... I'd have to take the plaque.

But on the serious side... if the tourney was for a good cause (charity) I'd have much pride in winning the plaque, and if I had any extra money I would throw it in for the cause.

Cool With the limited information available, the choice is easy, "Show me the Money".

Hunter, only half in jest, makes an excellent point. Since we are not discussing Mt. Rushmore, give me the money.

Nevertheless, place an equal value of money up against Mt. Rushmore and you can kiss Rushmore good bye!

For those of you not yet wondering what Erik is up to, in psychology we call this test the MMPI. It is specifically designed to identify pathological personality types. It's a simple formula; you just keep asking the same questions in different ways and amid different comparisons. The comparisons act as a lie detector and inconsistencies become evident over time. These inconsistencies are measured against the responses of really messed up people and when your responses match theirs, you get a pink slip in your in box informing you that you are no longer a member of SEWA.

It's amazing how much clearer things are to me when I am not taking my medication.

Now Taechon! Why on earth would you say such a thing? hehe

Um, er, ah....never took that course, but you got me! I am working on some things and yes, by asking the same questions several different ways I can figure out certain things about the way someone answers.

Kinda like the guy that says "It's not about the money" but then answers "I'll take the money". Sorta hard to defend one position with the other looming out there.

The point I am working towards is that it is indeed SOMEWHAT about money. Any sane person would have to agree, but often they don't becuase or social reasons -- often playing for money is considered bad by society in something like darts -- it should all be about the love of the sport right?

Give me a break. If I didn't love this sport as much as anyone else, then why on earth do I run this website? Why pay for others to play in regional competitions (yes I do that) and why run all of the shoots I run, the league, etc etc etc...of course I love this game, but I also love the chance to win some money playing it and I am willing to openly admit that!

    hehe
Relax folks, I'm just working on ideas and stuff...I won't take you to court on your answers.
    Erik
