A lot of talk this weekend at the Eastern WA / Titan dart league summer finals about nerves and how to prepare for them / deal with them.

Many dart players turn to alcohol to help break the nerves or keep them in check at the expense of fine motor skills and I believe the missing part of the equation is practice. Yes practice.

Players practice for accuracy, and as George Silbezhan suggests they practice for competition but I believe Bob 'the Limestone Cowboys Anderson gave the best advice I can share: always have someone on the line when playing.

That's right! Play for something -- money being the easiest. If $1 per game isn't enough, as I suggested to someone this weekend than make it $5 or $10 and see how the nerves affect you then! Reality is that too many forget, in my opinion, that like anything else practicing dealing with nerves can be done, and should be done and the only way to do so is to play lots of tournaments and to put something on the line when playing.

I like the hotbutton for G3's to help with that but I think that one of the best tools available for you is to find someone better than you and start challenging them for money. And again, if $1 aint enough to bring out the nerves, put more on the line. I'm quite certain that if you offered to play someone like Kevin 'Cool Hand' Luke for $10/game he'd jump on it and happily take your money giving you the perfect opportunity to play under stress.

In short, practice accuracy, practice competition and practice playing under stress when the nerves are at the highest -- and do it sober, no alcohol. If you do this, you are more than likely going to see improvements....or at least a lighter pocket book Wink

On a side note, I always played my best sober and when I played a lot of darts with people better than me for a buck a game (30 years ago mind you so maybe that's about $5 or $10 now).

I just happen to have a picture of Erik right after Bob explained the concept and then proved why he was a World Champion! Laughing
