Here in the Milwaukee WI area it's very poor. Back in the 80's & early 90's you could at least spot a bristle board here & there. Any tips on how to approach a bar owner on setting up a small steel tip league?

be ready for the "I-can't-afford-the-insurance" excuse - American bar owners seem to think pointy objects in bars are a liability (and they're probably right).

what you need to do is have some research and a plan ready because the one thing a bar owner wants to hear is how it's going to make him money.

Stupid bar owners! Thinking a dart is more dangerous then a pool cue or ball is moronic but sometimes they do think that.

Best thing is to just ask them if their interested in having a board up and if they had a night in particular that they could use more business.

    Usually works for me Smile

also be ready to supply the dartboard and backboard (and the scoreboard and the oche). ask around and be sure people are interested in playing first.

Here is a reply I received from one bar owner. He says he has no room, yet he sounds open to the idea.

" Unfortunately we are no longer set up for Steal Tip dart leagues. Even tough I have 41 soft tip dart teams I have considered putting up cork boards again. The only problem I have is space on certain nights. So I cannot help you out with a steel tip league right now, but if you would like to discuss further, please reply back."

I did reply back asking if he would be interested in trying one or two boards and a small league.

Houston is pretty much split. However you will pretty much see are bristle board in just about every pub. I am in waupaca wi right now and there are 0 steel tip boards. It's my once a year foray into soft tip. I have heard that Madison has a steel tip following. If I get a chance I'll check it out.

There are a couple of options, Steel-tip setups can be hung behind the Soft-tip machines and the machines could be moved out of the way when it is time for steel-tip play. Or you can build a frame that fits over the front of the soft-tip machine and hang the steel-tip boards over that. Our league is using these options at couple of bars in our area. It's not ideal, but it's a way to get steel-tip boards into a place that only has soft-tip.

the San Francisco Bay Area is split.

San Francisco, Marin (just north of SF), and San Mateo counties: all steel
Santa Clara county: mix, with a couple of venues for soft, but more steel
Alameda county (Oakland): mostly softtip with a few steel venues
Contra Costa (East Bay): mix, probably 50/50
Santa Cruz and Monterey: all steel from what I hear

Since the early 90's, I've watched the popularity of steel tip in Houston decline. Not only has steel tip league play been in decline but there has also been a decline in weekly steel tip LODs.

There are still many Houston pubs with only steel tip boards, but that largely depends on which area of Houston you are in. If you venture into the major pubs in the NW, N, NE, and SE areas of Houston, you'll find mostly soft tip boards.

When you compare the number of active players (leagues and LODs), the number of nightly LODs, and the number of pubs which have only soft tip boards, IMO, the tide in Houston has turned to soft tip.

For a hardcore steel tip player like myself, this is a hard pill to swallow. Rather than sit at home and fret, I now play more soft tip locally, than steel. The only time that I compete in steel is when I play in major steel tournaments... most of which are out of town. Sad

Good luck on getting a bar owner in a soft tip area, to set up a steel tip league.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think I may post an ad on Craigslist and see if I can find some interested steel tip players. Perhaps we could then team together and see if we can find a local venue for play.
