alcohol while playing darts only for social reasons?
Or you drink alcohol, because you feel it helps your game?

We`ve discussed alcohol and darts frequently and most probably drink some alcohol, though I know a few people, who swear alcohol will do their game some harm.

But do you drink it, because you meet in a pub or at a tournament and alcohol is offered and you like it better then drinking water or juice or peppermint-tea( it was always told, Phil Taylor drinks only peppermint-tea during a tournament, I can´t really believe it)?
Or has it a positive effect on your skill level?
What advantage has it over other drinks?

Social is the answer for me, though lately it's been more to patronize the bars that we play in. As for helping my game, I've been using B-12 with a lot of success instead of alcohol.

If I am serious and want to win, I don't drink. Drinking causes me to lose focus.

If I am out for a league night of social (yet competitive) darts I typically have 2 or 3 drinks in the course of the evening intermixed with a few diet cokes -- becuase I do not like to get drunk.

So yes I drink, and no I don't Wink

I quit drinking about 9 months ago and my performance has remained about the same. I use to drink to calm my nerves down prior to a match, but now i just stick with water and chewing gum. Been working ok for me and if a tourney does go later into the evening i dont have all that alcohol in my system making me tired.

I used to think a few beers helped my game the first couple years I played. I quit alcohol almost 6 years ago and don't miss it. This may be due to that, or playing longer, or learning from better people, but my game is MUCH better now than it ever was in those days.

I drink at least 6 beers before I even start to practice , for some reason it works for me...I've tried playing stone cold sober once , and that had to be my worst night of darts..So I just stay with what works...

I drink for social reasons on league night. Typically I am very careful with how much I drink and when I start drinking on a league night. I know that alcohol has a serious adverse effect on my game. At my local pub they all know it too, as I often get primed with free beer or shots from my opponents before they step to the oche against me, lol.

Last summer when I was in a summer singles league I use to show up with a couple water bottles and not touch alcohol. I had more than one shooter tell me they got a little intimidated by the fact that I could shoot stone cold sober. So now I carry a water bottle with me to every match.

I never drink during competition, tournaments or league. After, I may have one or two socially, just to wind down from the long day.

I drink b/c that's how I learned to play darts. However, I've cut back on the drinking, at times, and switched to chewing gum. I also use B-12 and find that it helps, especially in the mornings.

I think the main reason I drink is the social aspect. .. when I'm not drinking and everyone else is ... I think they are all acting silly... so I wanna be silly too... LOL

Bowling ... I don't drink and never have b/c I learned to bowl as a kid. However, I know people that get absolutely hammered every time they go bowling.

I've convinced myself that I can throw just as well (or as bad) sober as I can when I have a good buzz going. I'll usually have a couple beers when out playing darts, but my heavy drinking days are behind me.

Social is where its at now. In my younger years when your invincible and impervious to the dumbing effects of aiming fluid it might have been a case along with a shot or 12.
Have seen players on both side of this question and those who have been very very good when they needed a standing brace dog not a seeing eye dog. Those players haven't lasted through the years.
Those are also the ones who had problems follow them around like flies.
    Moderation is the game.

I have one beer on entering the premises, and one from the free jugs offered to the teams during the night. I rarely drink before I get to the game as it's a fine line for me between just enough and too much (aiming wise).

Also, there's my license to consider. I drive to all events and only ever have light beer.

I have noticed in my team however, that on the nights when the darts are more serious (playing better teams, coming into finals etc) that the 2 free jugs sit untouched for most of the night.

We even have one guy who switched to milkshakes on darts nights.

Well, I am not sure what you would call it in my case. On one hand, I drink to be social, and on the other hand, I drink because I like to. Put both hands together, and it adds up to a nice even glow, where, once I get there, I pace myself to make sure I don't exceed my limit.

I have played 2 seasons without drinking, and it didn't hurt my darts. I have also had to kneel on a chair and throw darts for a full season, due to a broken foot, and that didn't hurt my game either.

But the true reason I drink while playing darts, is because I hate to be around a bunch of drunks sober, now that is not fun. I am sure all you non drinkers will agree.

Drinking is more of a social thing! I am amazed at the people who are lined up at the bar at 11 am when it opens. Rolling Eyes

I never drink during a tournament. Depending on where we play during league nights there are team drinks, and once in a blue moon I'll have a beer. If I'm done playing or the match is decided, I might have a second one.

I drink early and often. I love that fearless edge it gives me, especially before the first singles match of the night. After that, I will taper off a bit but I just enjoy my beer, period.

My dart league is more of a guys night out, and we all drink, some more heavily than others. I don't drink to much but just enough to take that edge off.

I practice all week sober trying to work on technique and consistency, and when i get out and do some drinking and get loosened up it all just clicks. All of the work that i put into practice comes together when i just loosen up and throw the darts.

So i would say that it is a little of both. Socially because it is a guys night out, but also it loosens me up and stops me from thinking about what im doing and just do it.

As the sign said in my sponsor bar when I first started playing darts: "Buy something or get the **** out." Hey, it is a bar league, what more can you expect? I do know that the other team playing out of the same bar wasn't very popular with the owners due to the fact that they came in for 4-5 hours and sipped on 1 beer, water or a cup of coffee. Seemed like a quick way to sour the sponsor-team relationship.

I am curious though, are there many leagues that are not run by pubs (or played in pubs)? I haven't heard of any, but then again I haven't really checked. If you do play in such a league, please give some details about it...I'm curious.

I used to think that having a bit of a ring on calmed me down and made me throw better, but now I am not so sure. I'm not as nervous these days when playing, so that also helps I guess. There is definitely a point though where it all goes down hill if too many pints are knocked down during the night...I'm sure that goes without saying.

league night and i'm driving, 2 bottles of beer over the evening.
league night at my local, 3 or 4 pints.
saturday night at my house with my buddy, 6 or 7 or 8 bottles. (or more)
i feel it takes the nervous edge off and i also feel obliged to spend some of my money in the bar that is hosting. plus i really like beer, but i never get p*ssed. my game is effected more by cigarettes. as a part time social smoker the "dizzy sticks" can give you smokers arm for a few minutes, more jerky less smooth. if i were ever to make it into a tournament i would have a couple of beers and no smokes.
