HOW TO USE YOUR OWN IMAGE AS A CUSTOM AVATAR!

[edit bobdslob 31 May 2007, I notice that photobucket is constantly updating their user interface. Some of the bitmaps and terms you see below might be a little bit off. If you don't see exactly what I describe then take a closer look... they might have slightly renamed something, moved things around, etc. If you still have problems just post something to the forums or PM me. For now I won't bother editing this post trying to keep up with their changes. If it gets too confusing for new users then I will. Back to the instructions....]

Many people have had problems using custom avatars. I'm going to describe here how to do this for yourself using photobucket. But first, here's why I think it's the best way to go, short of hosting the image on your own personal website.

Uploading your avatar to sewa-darts.com and having it stored there costs erik money!. When your image is hosted on photobucket.com, photobucket.com pays for the bandwidth. In other words, everytime someone views a page with your avatar it costs someone money. Better that it's photobucket.com than Erik. Heck, avatar hosting is one of photobucket.com's main purposes, they glady pay for the bandwidth. Not only that, but it's free and easy to use.

One more thing, don't link to an "unknown" (or unaffiliated?) off-site image as your avatar. For instance, you find a funny picture on somerandomwebsite.com and you want to use it as your avatar. You take the URL of this pic and use it for your avatar. This is stealing bandwidth from somerandomwebsite.com, and could get Erik in some minor hot water. Instead, download the picture to your computer (right click on image, select save target as) and then upload it from your computer to photobucket.com.

    Ok, onto the instructions:

    *********************************************
    go to photobucket.com.
click "join now" and create a new account.
When this is finished, you'll see a page where you can upload your images. There is a field called "image" and next to it is a button called "browse". Click the browse button and choose your image.
After you've chosen your image, click the "submit" button.
When this is done you'll see something like this:

    http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/bobdslob/pb.jpg

Click inside the URL field, and you'll notice all the text is highlighted. If not, use your mouse to highlight the text. Do Ctrl-c to copy the URL to the clipboard.
Go to your sewa-darts.com profile. Click inside the "link to offsite avatar" field.
Do Ctrl-v to paste the URL from the clipboard.
    Click submit.

Now you should see how your new avatar looks. Go into a thread where you've already posted and check it out. You need to make sure your avatar isn't too big, or else it will screw up the formatting of the page. If it is too big, then go back to the image in photobucket.com and click the "edit" button above your picture. Choose one of the "resize image" options (25%, 50% or 75%) and click the "resize image" button. Go back to the sewa-darts.com forum and refresh the page that shows your avatar. It should show the new size. Keep doing this until it is small enough to not effect the thread formatting.
    *********************************************

I realize there are better ways to resize your image, but none simpler, IMO. I tried to keep these instructions as simple as possible, while at the same time including all the necessary steps.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to make corrections/suggestions. I'd also suggest a sticky for this thread, as it seems to be a recurring problem.

    [edit - clarity]

I dunno why you'd take advice from Bob after the way he messed up with his avatar - he just tried to put up his passport picture, and look how it came out! Confused

And you should use spell check, you left the "t" off of "gift".

Anyway, then can you ask whoever gave it to you as a present how the bleep it works, please??

[computer geeks, ya can't get a straight, simple, how-to answer outta any of them....and when you DO, he turns out to be some clown......]

I don't have a "link to offsite avatar" field on my profile page. What happens in that situation?

Oooh, BlackHorse, I recently found this animated gif tool:

    http://www.jhepple.com/gif_animator.htm

It's called CoffeeCup gif animator. Download and install it. It's a snap to use. Here's a sample I just made which took about 3 minutes to create. Kinda weak, but it shows that it works Very Happy
