    *Arrgh!!!!* Mad Mad Mad

I just don't get it. Well, not completely anyway. Sure, I used to be a 180 machine when I was young, but I also used to have a wicked back bend stance that I can't do any more. So, over 12 years ago I was forced to relearn how to throw in a more upright position. While it actually helped me hit everything else, it completely threw my 20's away. Nothing new to anyone who's been in these forums for the last 10+ years - they've heard this before from me (or seen it in all it's humor live).

So, for the last two weeks I've been working on restoring a nice stroke that can hit 20's. Unfortunately, it only has me wanting to break things and throw my darts out a window.

I think a good score for an "A" player in 100 darts at 20's is 100 (a few years ago I was hitting in the 140's). Now I can't seem to even get many games above 70(!) - yeah, 70! I just had a 62, a 55 and a 53 (yesterday was 57, 68 and 62). Really. My 19's are in the 120-130 range most of the time so I use those most of the time, but there are plenty of times in both '01 and cricket where you NEED to be able to hit 20's and, right now, they are killing me! Even worse, I appear to have two types of throws at the 20's: The first is the tiny group right on the wire, but in the 5's or 1's and the other type looks more like some kid throwing! I'll get a dart in the T18, one in the fat 9 and another in the 14's! Well, ok, there's also a third type which combines the two previous types - LOL!

What's most frustrating is that I've tried different stances, different areas on the line, different throws, pre-throws, body bends and speeds but none seem to make any difference (or, if they do, it certainly isn't positive!). Out of the blue I'll get one turn where it looks perfect so I try to throw the darts exactly the same on the next turn and they're not close! What the hell is going on??!

Ok, I'm done blowing off steam for now. *Sigh...* Confused

    How I know that feeling!

I think as we get older (and in my case the big '5-0') we tend to get pissed off more about what we used to do and no long can...but we also know we can change that. It's a question of whether or not we really really want to?

    Goof luck!

I am a feast or famine guy when it comes to the 20's Mainly because of those damn 5's lol. For me its purely how i hold the dart. Thankfully you have the 19's for 01. But like you said sometimes you just have to hit those 20's in cricket. When i am lazy and dont focus on the grip I will hit lots of 5's similarly with the 1's when aiming for the 18's. The key for me is maintaining the equal grip between my index and thumb. Any variance and i will go left because i throw mainly right handed.

Still working on these... Tried Paul's A, B, C approach and getting mixed results - just like before!

I can throw a gorgeous group one turn and a horrible one the next but they both feel the same... Sad

I was going to help you, CB, I really was, I mean I've spent much of my darting life since joining the public darting scene evolving sound mechanics with a smooth, repeatable, easy throwing motion. Plug and play virtually. My own improvement is what I take most pride in - going from about 60 in 100 @ 20s to always over 100, probably averaging 115 with many rounds in the 130s.

But I just saw your Canadian Air Force and Navy jokes so, keep on hitting from 9 to 18, ol buddy! Razz

My 20's were passable last night during league, but my out-work was non-existent! Confused

Guess that's what I'll need to work on next. Wayne Cree tossed a 171 on me (my usual trick) and I answered with three T7's... Damn! Mad

I did win the final game of doubles cricket (which won us the match) with a dead-eye. That felt good! Very Happy

Been working on my 20's for the last few weeks (again). Same results even trying new stuff (stance, speed, elbow, focus, etc.).

Getting old. Plus I get turns like this: T20, T20, S14 (and I mean dead middle S14, 5" away from the T20!). WHY???!!!

Tonight I played a couple of 100 darts at the 20's and had a total of ONE 6-count and three 5-counts in two legs... Ending up with 68 and 61.

I'm still about 40% of what I should be... Confused

Maybe things will improve after I get my first paycheck. Rolling Eyes

    Paychecks do help!

    Grip? Release?

No idea. Could be just about anything. I try to do the same thing every time, yet some turns it looks great and others I hit three different numbers (all of which are not what I was aiming for). Unfortunately, both turns sometimes feel exactly the same! Rolling Eyes

I had that going on back when I was testing a lot of different types of darts. Might be time to switch barrels for a while and see what happens. I have found when I struggle this can help reset my grip and release because the new barrel is unfamiliar and I have to work on it more consciously.

    If that makes sense?
