It's been a fact for me that if I want to play well... especially on league/tournament nights, I have to get some beers in me. It doesn't just help the with nerves and the mind in general, but the fluidity of the throwing motion.

I will put that to the test at home. When under the influence (at least 4 beers) I will take 50 turns using DartPro's "ShootOut" to simply score as much as possible.

Might take a month or two to get a large sample because I'm not usually under the influence at home and playing darts that often.

    Under the influence:
    Week 1 - 63.44 AVG
    Week 2 - 63.36 AVG
    Week 3 - 60.90 AVG - Didn't feel well
    Week 4 - 69.48 AVG
    Week 5 - 61.00 AVG
    Week 6 - 67.26 AVG
    Week 7 - 67.38 AVG
    Week 8 - 63.66 AVG
    Week 9 - 55.64 AVG
    Week 10-72.52 AVG
    Overall - 64.46 AVG

    Sober:
    Week 1 - 61.58 AVG
    Week 2 - 72.22 AVG
    Week 3 - 62.34 AVG
    Week 4 - 64.68 AVG
    Week 5 - 57.12 AVG
    Week 6 - 61.96 AVG
    Week 7 - 60.18 AVG
    Week 8 - 52.12 AVG
    Week 9 - 55.70 AVG
    Week10- 61.68 AVG
    Overall - 60.96 AVG

I should add that the problem will be when you are used to playing under the influence and not sober you tend to not play well sober. What I'd think would be a better test would be to be sober for 6 months and see if your darts improved once you got used to the sobriety.

For me, as always, two drinks and I lose some focus -- then my darts pay.

It's been that way since I was in my early 20's.

While I do partake in the liquid aim better known as beer, I have played full seasons without drinking, and didn't see any difference. That said, I never drink to improve my darts, I drink to improve everyone around me, because I can't stand being around a bunch of drunks sober, Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I found the Alcohol part interesting on the Full expose. Phil doesn't but everyone else does. They interestingly have a specific routine. I won't name the few top players I know. But they also have a specific routine of Alcohol. Of the pros on the 60 minute show, I found Van Gerwen the most telling. He has been around the game since a kid and made a splash at 17. Yet even he admits he has a 4 pint prep.

We have talked at length before regarding this. Interestingly I have a player playing on my team now whom doesn't drink at all and another whom partakes of 1 drink the entire night. We are very equal players. It should be an interesting comparison from this seasons performances.

Well one drunk and one sober so far and both above 60 which is good (for me). I'll do it again next Saturday - 1 sober and 1 after 4 beers. I'll keep them in the OP. 4 beers doesn't get me drunk, but I usually start playing well by that point judging by league/tournament nights.

For me, drinking has little effect on my game, that said I do not drink when I practice. I also do not drink heavy when I play. For me I much more affected by temperature or a cigar.

I don't usually drink before playing at home, but do when I'm out at league. I think I have about a 2 drink threshold. If I drink 4 like many of you mention, someone will have to get a wheelbarrow to bring me home. LOL

I've played complete seasons before without alcohol (was on meds for anxiety.. maybe they helped?) My average wasn't really any different than under the influence. If I could shoot a steady 60+ average under the influence, I'd carry a flask with me.

For many, it's just a mental crutch. I can't fathom how alcohol is supposed to improve a fine motor skill movement. It only provides more confidence.

Looks like my theory could be blown to pieces Laughing

72.22 sober! I almost never average that high over a long period like 150 darts. I was at 74+ with 9 darts to go but had some weak shots. In 50 throws I had 12 100+, a 140 and a 180.

My form is definitely improving. Think my recent dart change to Simon Whitlock darts plus straightening up my technique combined with some tournament play has really helped.

Lets not blame your improvement on not drinking, lol Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing It must be the new darts Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Sorry, couldn't resist. I think your improvement has a lot to do with not drinking first, and then maybe the new darts. I also think that once you just start throwing sober, without thinking about it, you will see an even bigger change. Just my opinion, but I agree with Budzooka, when he said he couldn't see how alcohol could improve one's motor skills.

Not true Chris. I have no problem using my coozie when I am drinking half Cranberry, and half Orange juice in a big beer glass. It stretches it a bit, but it works fine. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Aww yeah. Under the influence right now.

69+ avg in the shootout and I played so well towards the end of it that I decided to have a SEWA practice on the 20's. I improved from 122 to 133 with 10 turns involving at least 2xT20 Cool

Well 10 weeks is a big enough sample. The conclusion is pretty clear... I had a 4 point advantage on the averages after some beer.

The first 4 weeks there was little difference, but after the half way point I started to slump and that's when I think beer had the bigger advantage. Despite having one 50 something average while under the influence during the slump, I got a lot of decent scores as well including my highest average of the 10 week period. I found that during the last few weeks I struggled and wasn't feeling comfortable and hit a lot more 5's and 1's. But when drinking I wasn't thinking about how I was holding the dart, I just threw more naturally.

So I guess this means I still have to get tanked in leagues and tournaments. My early games tend to be nervy and later in the night I'm more free and easy. This experiment was done without the added pressure of competition and I still got the higher averages when drinking.

I think you'll find that you can get the same benefits using B12.

That's why you should try it and compare with the results you already have.

I'm not referring to just any vitamin supplements, I'm specifically talking about B12. If you search the forums, you'll find we've been over this a few times.

Interesting. I'm skeptical, but I'll give it a shot
