Well having been employed for 37 years with an Electric Utility I'll be curious to know who thinks that the upcoming Nemo will be of the same stature.
I have some great stories, one in particular about the "Bigguys" home in Scituate when he was a "little tike".. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I heard that you guys might get whacked Friday with a monster! Two feet of snow possible? Crazy.

    Not loving this junk..

I think we're better prepared as a society now for it thanks to technology..plus nobody believed it would happen so they just ignored the forecast and found out the hard way

Blizzard warning in effect...That means if the power goes out in this area, forget it, no buckets up in the wind...prepare for the worst and laugh if they are wrong...My gut feeling and by the looks of the maps is that we are going to get belted!!!

Kirb, I think you may someday get snowfall like '78, but you'll not see the same extent of problems. People on the whole have learned. I'm not saying there won't be some who will brave it regardless but the whole won't.

Myself, I'm sweating out Saturday since my father in law has dialysis that day

come on now...anyone that lives in New England and complains of the weather needs to move. YOU'RE IN NEW ENGLAND. I personally love it. This weekend we will get to snowshoe and hike in actual winter conditions and prep for our trip to NH to climb Cochorua next weekend. So much fun to be outside in the snow, seeing things that many never do.

This is a good opportunity to double check the pantry and stock up on cold weather items (candles, food, propane for the camp stove etc.) if it isn't too late already!

If it was up to me, I'd have moved some time ago Derek. Right now with my father in law's issues and my parents getting up there I don't want to leave them, but when that changes..

Already checked mine..I have a propane grill in the garage, but I should pull my charcoal out of the shed just in case..or if any friends or family need help.

How about water? Heat? Easy to prepare meals?

I grew up in British Columbia in areas that often lost power in the winter and we had a routine that always saw us through. First we'd get all the water we could (we were on lake water the last period of time this was common and the pump would quit with the power but there was always a little pressure for a bit so we could fill the tub up), drag out the camp stove (for indoor cooking), stock the wood stove and get out the candles and lamps.

These days it's less of an issue but old habits die hard and the last outage we had (2 days) we 'camped' out in the house with a good supply of candles, lamps, water, food and temp heat...and got lucky because our neighbor had a big genny that he allowed us to use some of the power from for our fridge and freezer.

    Water..yup, had 2 5 gallon jugs.
Heat..yup, candles and we have a gas stove. I shoveled every couple of hours and every time I triple checked the tailpipes of the trucks, plus made sure they both had a full tank of fuel.
Food..yup, had lots of cereal and canned stuff to last a few days.

No wood stove or fireplace inside, but I did throw a tarp over my wood pile and if it came to it we could have made a fire in the driveway...we have one of those small grill-like things.

I have about 4 flashlights that are crank style, so if the charge ran out I would have a backup at least.

If people remember the shoreline all along Massachuttes Bay was frozen with upto as much as a foot of ice in some places and when that storm came in, it used that ice as a chisel and changed the coastline in many spots, took homes right off their foundations and deposited them hundreds of feet away..Inland the snow fall was incredible, and killed "all" of my companys feeders which meant there was no power anywhere in the 21 towns and cities we service..There was no travel at all for 2 days unless you owned a 4 wheel dr. or a dump truck..Remember there were no cell phones back then..
The only thing that I considered worse with this storm was that it was a lot colder durring and after the low went by whereas after the 78 storm the sun came out and it actually warmed up..
All in all...nothing I haved ever experienced in the winter time comes close to that monster in 78..and I was 27 yrs old then..

The first time we (ryans and kirby boys) did it the temp was in the 80's in the Valley and was in the 40's at the summit...The second time it was throwing snow at us at the summit, but Larry and I did'nt care... Laughing Laughing When we left to head back down the tempwent back up to the mid 70's by the time we got down..Just an amazing way the weather works with the altitude.... Wink
