Here's a new game I just made up after reading Blackhorse's 901 game. The goal is to practice hitting bullseyes, to get the most out of fewer darts and to get used to pressure.

It's based on playing 301 DIDO, but before you're allowed to use any darts for score you need to hit a bull EACH TURN (single or double - it doesn't matter which) and, if you don't hit at least one bull, you'll ADD points to your total. Twisted Evil

For example, a game might go like this (where "bull" means either a SB or a DB):

Start with 301, DIDO, missed bulls are worth 20 points, and DB's have no special meaning:

    Turn 1 - bull, miss, D14 (28 scored, 273 left)
Turn 2 - miss, miss, miss (no bulls hit so add 20 points to your total - now 293 left)
    Turn 3 - miss, bull, T20 (60 scored, 233 left)
Turn 4 - miss, miss, bull (bull hit so no change in total - 233 left)
    Turn 5 - bull, T20, S20 (80 scored, 153 left)
    Turn 6 - bull, T5, S18 (33 scored, 120 left)
    Turn 7 - miss, bull, S20 (20 scored, 100 left)
Turn 8 - miss, miss, miss (no bulls hit so add 20 points to your total - now back to 120 left)
    Turn 9 - miss, bull, T20 (60 scored, 60 left)
    Turn 10 - bull, S20, D20 (Game over!)

That should lengthen a "short" game a bit for ya! Twisted Evil

I see four "options" that you can toy with in this game:

    1) You can change the starting total (301, 501, etc.)

    2) You can choose to start without a double (i.e., straight in)

    3) You can change the missed bull penalty (10 points, 20 points, etc.)

    4) You can give any DB you hit some extra benefit - I would avoid using it as a multiplier (e.g., doubling your turn score), but maybe each one you hit can negate a penalty later on (in other words, keep it like a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card in Monopoly and, on a turn where you don't hit a bull, use it to keep your total left the same - no penalty - just remember, once you use it, it's gone!)

Let me know what you think. Wink

Great game I like it. I play something similar to this with cricket. Bull before mark. I like the penalty. I'll add a mark to all #'s for 3 missed bulls. Including bulls.

I'll ask the bartender to call a cab to take my drunken butt home.

Actually, this game could be tough for me. With a 20 point penalty for missing bulls and only 1 or 2 darts to score with if I hit one, I could find myself in an infinite loop!

I wanna try it, though. I might make the DB "bonus" count for an extra bull that carries to the start of the next turn. So if I hit a DB in one round, I don't have to start the next turn with a bull. Then it might only take me two hours to finish instead of three.

    Nice one, CB.

Bull Diddley has the pressure and the opening Bull shots, but you have incorporated it really well into a full game. Cool

I gave this game a try last night and really enjoyed it. I played with Craig’s rules posted above, except that I added my rule about hitting the DB (also posted above). I only hit one, so it didn’t make a lot of difference.

This is is definitely a game that makes every dart count – you gotta hit that bull so you can score, or at least save your score, and you only have one or two darts to score with. For me, at least, that’s much better than practicing regular ’01 because I tend to get apathetic with the scoring.

It took me about 15 rounds to finish the game (only played it once). For the first 9 or 10 rounds, I kinda got into the infinite loop I mentioned earlier: I was missing the bulls every other round and only hitting 20 or 40 points in the rounds I got a bull. After 9 rounds, I still had 219 left.

But the last several rounds I got the bull dialed in and hit it with the first dart every turn. Made better progress and got out in just a few rounds.

I’ll definitely play this game some more. I loved the feeling of “I HAVE to hit this” with every dart in my hand. I know, I should always think that way. But I usually don’t; maybe this game will teach me. Thanks, CraigB!

I just played this for the first time. A good game to play. I played well. It took me about 20 minutes and I only got hit with the 20 pt. penalty twice. 5 turns in a row, I hit the bull with my 3rd dart to avoid penalty. I assumed this game to be just like a 301 and that the game doesn't start until you hit a bull. I missed my 1st 3 darts at the bull and did not add 20 points to the 301.
